Richard Burton is simply brilliant in this adaptation of John le Carre's espionage thriller. He plays a burnt-out British spy ordered to venture undercover into East Germany. Forced to fake his resignation and subsequent depression to convince the enemy they can trust him, he gradually becomes deeply embroiled in his mission and realises he's nothing but a pawn.
