Almost unbearably emotional drama looking at how the death of a child affects a family, as the various members attempt to hide their grief and guilt - but are forced to face up to their loss when an old flame of their son pays a surprise visit. Nanni Moretti's film, in which he also appears, deservedly scooped the 2001 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Powerful supporting performances come courtesy of Laura Morante, Jasmine Trinca and Giuseppe Sanfelice
