Almost unbearably emotional drama looking at how the death of a child affects a family, as the various members attempt to hide their grief and guilt - but are forced to face up to their loss when an old flame of their son pays a surprise visit. Nanni Moretti's film, in which he also appears, deservedly scooped the 2001 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
