Billy Bob Thornton gives arguably the best performance of his career in this remarkable offering, which he also wrote and directed. He plays a man with learning difficulties, convicted of murdering his mother and her lover at the tender age of 12, who is released from prison and heads back to his home town. He soon strikes up an unlikely friendship with a local lad and his widowed mum - but it's not long before his feelings for them cause trouble.
