American Civil War veteran Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) embarks on a quest to find his niece, who has been kidnapped by a renegade Native American tribe responsible for slaughtering the rest of his family - but as the search continues, his motives become increasingly twisted, and it becomes unclear just what he hopes to achieve by completing his quest.
