Many films lose their impact over time, but not this one. David Lean's gorgeous romantic epic, set during the 1916 Troubles, is just as moving now as it was on its initial cinema release in 1970. It tells the tale of a shell-shocked British Army officer's affair with a young married Irishwoman - a fling which brings shame on her and incurs the wrath of her neighbours. Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles and John Mills (in a superb Oscar-winning role) head the cast
