Honest gunfighter James Cagney is released from prison after serving time for a crime he didn't commit and soon befriends a young upstart (John Derek). When the older man is appointed sheriff of a nearby town, he insists that his younger colleague is made deputy - but soon discovers his loyalty is misplaced.
