Mae and Tom Garvey and their children run a farm on the banks of a Tennessee river that provides their crops with water but leaves them at constant risk of flooding. Facing a threatened bank repossession, Tom is forced to work in a factory during a union strike to make ends meet. But a further crisis approaches as the river bursts its banks.
