The naive second wife of a wealthy Cornish landowner is forced to live in the shadow of her glamorous predecessor, who died in mysterious circumstances. The servants all seem devotedly loyal to their late mistress, particularly the sinister housekeeper, and the new arrival is driven to the brink of madness as she begins to question her relationship with her husband. Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine star in Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning romantic melodrama, based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier and shown as part of a series of programmes celebrating the centenary of the author's birth.
