Uli Edel's award-winning drama charting the life of the sinister peasant who styled himself as a bizarre holy man with a taste for wine, women and debauchery. He ended up in St Petersburg, where he managed to wheedle his way into Tsarina Alexandra's confidence in the turbulent years leading up to the Russian Revolution, thanks largely to his apparent ability to heal her son. Alan Rickman is mesmerising in the lead role, causing scandal and dissent in the royal court with obvious glee, while Ian McKellen, Greta Scacchi, David Warner, John Wood and James Frain provide top-class support
