The Producers
Movie (1968)
Mel Brooks wrote and directed this sparky satire, and deservedly won an Oscar for his pains. A Broadway producer (Zero Mostel) plans to make a fortune from producing a flop - the side-splitting Springtime for Hitler - but is horrified when it becomes an instant smash hit instead. Gene Wilder is on top form as a crooked accountant also in on the scheme and Brooks' direction is inspired, particularly the hilarious bad-taste musical numbers, which somehow capture the imagination of the New York glitterati
