Adaptation of Dennis Potter's musical drama, starring Steve Martin as a troubled sheet-music salesman working during the Depression who falls for a beautiful but fragile woman. It looks great, but the story is stilted - luckily the toe-tapping songs provide a welcome distraction from the shortcomings. Also starring Bernadette Peters, Christopher Walken and Jessica Harper
