Movie (1949)
A suburb of wartime London is freed from the strictures of rationing by virtue of a 15th-century charter, prompting a chaotic influx of would-be residents - but their elation soon fades as it becomes clear the future's not as rosy as it first appeared. Gentle Ealing comedy laden with the studio's trademark quirky characters drawn in intricate detail, making it a joy to watch. Stanley Holloway, Margaret Rutherford, Barbara Murray, Basil Radford and Hermione Baddeley are among the uniformly excellent cast. Part of Democracy Week
