Charlie Chaplin leaves his 'Little Tramp' persona well and truly behind to play a mild-mannered banker who periodically pops off to the countryside, adopts a new identity, weds a wealthy woman then bumps her off, all in an effort to support his struggling family. This pitch black comedy is fantastic stuff, a real gem - sadly it was a flop on release due to whisperings about Chaplin's supposed Communist leanings. Martha Raye and Marilyn Nash also star
