Italian trader Antonio borrows money from ruthless Jewish moneylender Shylock to finance his latest venture, on the condition that if he fails to pay the money back, a pound of flesh will be demanded instead. But when an unforeseen crisis leaves Antonio unable to settle the debt, he is horrified to discover that Shylock has every intention of keeping to the fatal bargain.
