The Marquis de Sade directs a play while incarcerated in a lunatic asylum, using his fellow inmates as the cast. His subject is the life of a hero of the French Revolution, but the first performance descends into chaos and violence as ideological conflict erupts between the director, the governor of the hospital and the lead actor. Peter Brook's historical drama based on his stage production, with Patrick Magee and Ian Richardson
