A German racketeer risks his life to rescue a kidnapped British girl from communists and escort her back to safety - but is forced to make a tremendous sacrifice to ensure her survival. Atmospheric but surprisingly uninspired tale of loyalty and betrayal in post-war Berlin from The Third Man director Carol Reed. Leading players James Mason and Claire Bloom are as watchable as ever, but this is not one of their most memorable movies.
