Five Western refugees fleeing the Chinese revolution are involved in a plane crash over the Himalayas. An encounter with a mysterious stranger leads them to the idyllic Tibetan valley of Shangri-La, where time stands still. One of their number, a former diplomat, becomes convinced they have been brought there for a reason and seeks an audience with the enigmatic High Lama.
