Ulrich Muhe stars as secret service agent Wiesler, whose life is spent dispassionately spying on and recording the activities of suspected enemies of the state. His latest subject is a celebrated playwright and his actress lover. But as he watches them, he becomes increasingly obsessed with their daily lives - as well as learning some unexpected secrets.
