The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Movie (1943)
Acclaimed film-making duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressberger created a surprising amount of controversy with this sentimental, but sharply satirical, story. The problem was caused by the title character, a comically out-of-date British officer, who didn't quite fit in with how the military wished to be perceived during World War Two. The tale itself follows the career of Major General Clive Wynne-Candy VC, from the Boer War, through World War One and eventually into the Home Guard. Told in flashback, Roger Livesey is on fine form as the officer and gentleman of the title role, while Deborah Kerr provides the love interest and Anton Walbrook and John Laurie number among the supporting cast.
