The League of Gentlemen

Nothing to do with the television comedy of the same name, this nail-biting crime caper takes a subtle approach to action that's lacking from most films these days, making it a hugely enjoyable affair. It follows the antics of former Army colonel Jack Hawkins, who's left furious when the top brass insist on his retirement - and sets out to exact an elaborate revenge by blackmailing ex-servicemen into taking part in a robbery plotted with military precision. The addition of a sly sense of humour is a bonus, as are Hawkins' co-stars, including Nigel Patrick, Richard Attenborough, Roger Livesey, Bryan Forbes and Kieron Moore
