Movie (2004)
The Coen brothers' remake of the classic Ealing comedy relocates the story to America's Deep South, with Tom Hanks as a silver-tongued criminal mastermind masquerading as a college professor. The crook rents the spare room of an elderly church-going lady with the intention of tunnelling from her basement to a nearby casino. But when his indomitable landlady discovers the scheme, he and his partners in crime realise the only way to guarantee her silence is by murdering her - a task that is easier said than done. Hanks is delightfully eccentric, but it suffers in comparison to both the original and the Coens' back catalogue. Irma P Hall, Marlon Wayans and JK Simmons also star
