After his parents split up, a young boy ends up living in a New York boarding house during the 1950s. With his mother forced to work round the clock to support them, the kindly owner takes the youngster under her wing. He finds a new family in her various tenants - all looking for a new start in life - and develops a love of blues and soul music.
