Leslie Caron plays a pregnant French woman who gets involved with various strange characters at a boarding house after arriving in London to face some difficult decisions about her future. The film caused a furore on release and was considered hugely shocking, partly because of its frank treatment of abortion, and although much of the impact has been lost over time, it remains a fascinating and affecting offering.
