Director Nicholas Ray's good-looking chronicle of the birth, life and death of Christ, narrated by Orson Welles. The top-notch cast manage to raise this occasionally ponderous drama above the level of most movies of its ilk. Teen idol of his time Jeffrey Hunter is on impressive form, bearing the weight of the film as the Son of God - although his fresh-faced appearance earned the film the nickname I Was a Teenage Jesus.
