Robert De Niro stars as would-be stand-up comic Rupert Pupkin, who is desperate for a shot at TV stardom - to the extent of kidnapping the host of his favourite chat show and taking over the programme. Martin Scorsese's unmissable dark satirical comedy is perhaps his most underrated film - and years ahead of its time in its portrayal of an obsessive pursuit of celebrity at all costs. With his relentless pushiness and tenuous grasp on reality, Pupkin is in his own way just as terrifying as the various gun-toting tough guys in Scorsese and De Niro's back catalogue.
