Jean de Florette

Farmer Cesar accidentally kills one of his neighbours and becomes determined to get his hands on the dead man's land for the valuable natural spring it contains. However, a city dweller and his daughter inherit the property, so the covetous Cesar and his nephew concoct a cruel scheme to ruin the newcomer. Director Claude Berri's superb drama deservedly won international acclaim, thanks to the beautiful photography and affecting performances from a cast including Yves Montand, Gerard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil. Based on the novel by Marcel Pagnol, this triumph of cinema was followed by a sequel, Manon des Sources, which can be seen tomorrow
