Movie (1986)
Farmer Cesar accidentally kills one of his neighbours and becomes determined to get his hands on the dead man's land for the valuable natural spring it contains. However, a city dweller and his daughter inherit the property, so the covetous Cesar and his nephew concoct a cruel scheme to ruin the newcomer. Director Claude Berri's superb drama deservedly won international acclaim, thanks to the beautiful photography and affecting performances from a cast including Yves Montand, Gérard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil. Based on the novel by Marcel Pagnol, this triumph of cinema was followed by a sequel, Manon des Sources, which can be seen tomorrow
