Lifelong friends Ben (Rob Morrow) and Adam (Jake Weber) find their lives altered for ever after a chance meeting in bar with Nina (Claire Forlani). Adam and Nina marry, and Ben leaves to embark on a career as a writer in New York, but he returns after a string of failed relationships and begins an affair with his best friend's wife.
