A Norwegian family struggle against mounting hardship to build a new life in early 20th-century San Francisco, relying on matriarch Irene Dunne (giving one of her finest performances) for the strength and support they need to get them through difficult times. Sentimental fact-based drama which fortunately never slips into sugary nonsense but remains genuinely affecting. Barbara Bel Geddes, Oscar Homolka and Cedric Hardwicke also appear. Shown to mark the centenary of director George Stevens' birth
