Movie (1954)
David Lean's fine adaptation of Harold Brighouse's classic Lancashire comedy. Charles Laughton is superb as a cantankerous, overbearing boot-maker who spends most of his time drinking while his three daughters push themselves to the limit taking care of his shop and home. Timid John Mills is the employee who marries one of the old man's offspring - then sets himself up as a rival for his business. Look out for Prunella Scales in an early role, alongside Brenda de Banzie, Daphne Anderson, Richard Wattis and Derek Blomfield
