A widowed matchmaker sets about winning the heart of a skinflint grain merchant in late 19th-century New York. Lavish Oscar-winning musical directed by Gene Kelly, himself no stranger to extravagant productions, starring celebrated songstress Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau in one of his most unlikely roles and an American-accented, pre-Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em Michael Crawford.
