Heaven's Gate

Michael Cimino's epic Western drama became a notorious failure on release, after the director spent massively over budget, and critics denounced it as self-indulgent. With the benefit of hindsight, it does make for fascinating viewing, although the rather over-enthusiastic editing of the original print leaves it sadly incomprehensible. Set in 19th-century America, it charts the conflicts between Wyoming ranchers and the immigrant settlers suspected of rustling their livestock, as a county marshal desperately tries to broker peace between the two sides - only for his dalliance with a local woman to get in the way of things, leading to all-out war.
