Martin Scorsese's visceral gangster thriller, starring Ray Liotta as an Italian-American from a poor neighbourhood, who grows up idolising the glamorous lifestyle of the Mafia 'wiseguys'. Taken under the wing of mobster Robert De Niro, he rises quickly in the world of organised crime. But he soon has murder and treachery to contend with, while his involvement in drug deals places him at risk from both sides of the law. This masterful effort is one of Scorsese's finest films. Joe Pesci won an Oscar for his terrifying supporting role as Liotta's unstable partner in crime
