Joseph Fiennes and Dennis Haysbert star in this true story set against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa. Fiennes plays James Gregory, a prison guard and lifelong believer in his society's racist ideology, who is assigned to Robben Island prison to watch over its most famous inmate - Nelson Mandela (Haysbert). Gregory's understanding of the Xhosa language earns him the job of spying on Mandela and his fellow prisoners, but instead over the years an unusual relationship develops between the two, leading Gregory to question his beliefs.
