The Go-Between

Writer Harold Pinter and director Joseph Losey teamed up for the third time to produce this gorgeous period piece, adapted from a novel by LP Hartley. It's the romantic story of an upper-class woman who falls in love with a farmer in Edwardian England, as seen through the eyes of a naive boy who helps the couple by delivering secret messages between them - little realising the terrible consequences his actions will have for all concerned. Julie Christie and Alan Bates light up the screen as the star-crossed pair, while Dominic Guard gives a measured performance as their personal postman and Margaret Leighton scooped an Oscar nomination for her part in the drama
