Synopsis:
This electric adaptation of John Steinbeck's period novel was the film that shot James Dean to stardom. He plays the rejected son of stern patriarch Raymond Massey, who discovers his mother, believed dead, is actually working in a brothel. All the cast give assured performances - but Dean's particularly stands out - and Ted McCord's photography is wonderful. Co-star Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for her work.
