Paul Newman reprises his role as private detective Lew Harper, who travels to New Orleans to help an old girlfriend who is being blackmailed, only to uncover a complex case involving sex, murder, and a bitter power struggle with an oil tycoon. Convoluted whodunit, based on Ross MacDonald's novel, featuring an effectively eccentric cast including Newman's off-screen wife Joanne Woodward, Coral Browne, Murray Hamilton and an early appearance by Melanie Griffith
