Acclaimed Asian drama about a poor Bengali farmer and his son forced to find work in the slums of Calcutta to pay off debts owed to their unscrupulous landlord. Directed by celebrated film-maker Bimal Roy and starring Balraj Sahni, Murad and Ratan Kumar, the film is in stark contrast to other big studio productions coming out of Bombay, using location and ambience to create an effective documentary-style story
