A Russian conductor's career comes to an end during the Soviet era, and he is reduced to working on the cleaning staff at the Bolshoi theatre. When he intercepts an invitation for the Bolshoi orchestra to perform in Paris, he plans to revive his career by having his own musicians perform instead.
