Cold Mountain

Directed by Anthony Minghella, which is recommendation in itself - but the best thing about this powerful romantic drama is, without a doubt, Renee Zellweger's Oscar-winning performance as mountain woman Ruby, who saves the desolate Ada (Nicole Kidman) in the American Civil War and is, in turned, saved by her. Jude Law is the soldier who goes off to war after declaring his love for Ada. Neither realises it will be three long, harrowing years before they see each other again - or that their reunion will be painfully short-lived. Co-stars include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Donald Sutherland. Music fans should watch out for a supporting role from Jack White, of the White Stripes, who also provides a number of songs for the film's soundtrack.
