Affecting Brazilian drama chronicling the everyday lives of a group of youngsters living in a violent and lawless Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood. Seen through the eyes of an aspiring photographer, who decides against following his peers into a life of crime, the action is both captivating and shocking as drugs and gun crime affect adults and children alike. Nominated for four Oscars, the feature marked the directorial debut of Fernando Meirelles, who would receive another nod from the Academy for The Constant Gardener.
