Disillusioned US Air Force pilot Alan Arkin becomes desperate to escape the carnage of World War Two, and resolves to prove himself too crazy to fly any more - but his scheme soon backfires. Mike Nichols' adaptation of the best-selling satirical anti-war novel by Joseph Heller doesn't really do the book justice, but it's a biting piece of black comedy nonetheless.
