Carandiru

Harrowing prison drama, based on the first-hand accounts of a doctor who served at Brazil's Carandiru penitentiary, the largest jail in South America. The medic is appalled at the horrific conditions the inmates are forced to live in, and strikes up close friendships with many of the prisoners. However, eventually the convicts resort to rioting in protest at the brutality and squalor, and are met by a vicious and brutal counter-attack from the police.
