Burt Lancaster gives a riveting performance in his second film, this time playing Joe Collins, a tough prisoner on a cell block where beatings and brutality are commonplace. After corrupt and sadistic warden Hume Cronyn drives one of the inmates to suicide, Joe leads his fellow convicts in a revolt.
