In 1940, a hapless Parisian is behind bars wrongfully charged with murder. Fortunately, the evacuation of the jail on the eve of the fall of France allows his escape, and he heads to Bordeaux in search of his old flame, a spoilt film actress who is now being paid court to by a local politician.
