Movie (2006)
Ioan Gruffudd gives an impressive lead performance in this biopic of 18th-century abolitionist William Wilberforce. After being elected to the House of Commons, the Hull-born reformer and his fellow humanitarians hatched a courageous plan to introduce a bill outlawing the lucrative slave trade, but their bold actions were met with stiff opposition from those who were likely to lose a lucrative business. The 'Amazing Grace' of the title is the popular hymn, which was written by one of Wilberforce's supporters. Romola Garai, Albert Finney, Michael Gambon and Rufus Sewell also star.
