The Age of Innocence
Movie (1993)
Martin Scorsese's subtle and intelligent romantic drama set in 19th-century New York, adapted from Edith Wharton's novel. Lawyer Daniel Day-Lewis gets engaged to the beautiful but bland Winona Ryder, and then finds his life thrown into turmoil by his fiancee's seductive older cousin, a woman ostracised by society. Initially, he plans to use his standing to restore her damaged reputation, but struggles to come to terms with the strength of his feelings toward her. He decides to go ahead with his marriage in the hope it will help him forget, but instead all three of them are plunged into emotional turmoil. Michelle Pfeiffer, Richard E Grant, Geraldine Chaplin and Miriam Margolyes also star.
