A prim missionary is forced to flee her home in German East Africa at the outbreak of the First World War. The only transport available comes courtesy of a gin-sodden Canadian riverboat captain, and as the bickering and unlikely travelling companions make their perilous journey, she persuades him to aid the British war effort.
