Jack Nicholson gives one of his best performances of recent years, as a grouchy and aggrieved sixtysomething struggling to cope with two recent life-changing events: the death of his wife and enforced retirement. Looking for a new direction for his life, he seeks solace in writing letters to a Tanzanian orphan and attempting to stop his daughter's marriage to a man he considers unworthy of her. Nicholson drops the trademark wolfish grin and proves utterly compelling as a downtrodden everyman in this poignant comedy, also starring Hope Davis, Kathy Bates, Dermot Mulroney and June Squibb.
