A Victorian scientist is on a mission to investigate the mysterious sinking of whaling ships in the Pacific, when he falls overboard during an attack on his vessel by a sea monster. He is drifting in the water alongside a hardened mariner and a diver, when they are captured by deranged submariner Captain Nemo and whisked away on a series of adventures in his amazing underwater craft.
