      The Rules of Attraction

Black comedy adapted from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, chronicling the experiences of a group of college students as they immerse themselves in a heady combination of sex, drugs and confused relationships. Director Roger Avary (who co-wrote Pulp Fiction) injects the film with a hip and dark edge, but the superficial sheen means the serious subject matter lacks the appropriate intensity. Anthony Hopkins reprises his most famous role as Hannibal Lecter for this gripping thriller prequel. Edward Norton co-stars as Will Graham, the FBI agent who first captured Lecter, only to quit the bureau soon after. However, he is lured out of retirement when a demented murderer begins slaughtering entire families every full moon, forcing Graham to seek the imprisoned cannibal's expertise. Adapted from the first, and arguably best, of Thomas Harris' novels to feature Lecter, this effective chiller may not be in the same league as The Silence of the Lambs, but it does boast a top-notch cast, from Ralph Fiennes' creepy yet tragic killer to Philip Seymour Hoffman's sleazy tabloid hack.
